Frequently Asked Questions

Referrals and Wait Times
Do I need a referral to be seen?

Yes. We only see patients who have been referred by another physician or nurse practitioner. It is preferred if referrals are sent following an in-person assessment of the skin concern, but if not possible virtual referrals are accepted on a case by case basis.

Has my referral been received?

Once the referral is received it will be triaged and an estimated wait time will be sent by fax to the referring provider within two weeks. Due to our high volume of calls, please do not call the office to check the status of your referral. Voicemail messages inquiring about this will not be returned.

How long is the wait time?

The wait time varies by the urgency of the referral. On average, urgent requests are seen within 3 months, semi-urgent within 6-9 months, and routine dermatology concerns within 18-24 months. We cannot guarantee a specific wait time but try our best to see patients as soon as possible.

If your skin condition changes while waiting to be seen please see your referring provider for reassessment. They can send a request for a sooner assessment if needed.

Is there a cancellation list?

We do not have a cancellation list. If you are available on short notice for an appointment this should be included in the referral letter and our staff will make a note of this. Please note that this does not guarantee an appointment sooner than your estimated wait time.

After my referral is sent can I call to make an appointment?

No. Our staff will call when an appointment becomes available. All phone calls come from 236-601-9819. On some phones this does not show as a local Prince George number.

We typically schedule appointments 1-2 months from the date of the phone call. An automated reminder is sent 3 days prior to your appointment via your preferred method of communication (text, phone, or email).

What if I miss my appointment?

When you are scheduled for an appointment our staff will review our no-show policy. We require 24 hours notice to cancel and/or reschedule an appointment, this is so your appointment time can be offered to another patient.

We have a no-show fee of $50 + tax and appointments will not be rescheduled until outstanding fees are paid.

Do you see patients outside of Northern Health?

No. Due to the length of our waitlist we are currently only seeing patients who live in communities within Northern Health.

Do I have to pay for my appointment?

All appointments are covered under MSP. If you are from outside the country and are living in Canada temporarily, please ensure that your MSP is active (more information at www.gov.bc.ca). Patients without active MSP coverage will be charged privately for the appointment. We are not responsible for any lapse in MSP or insurance coverage.

Phototherapy is covered by MSP. Patients are however required to purchase a pair of protective eye goggles (approx. $8.00) that are then brought to each phototherapy session.

Some in office procedures or treatments are not covered by MSP. Our dermatologists will inform you beforehand if a service is not covered (e.g. benign mole removal).

I was previously seen by a dermatologist at LM Dermatology, do I need a new referral to be seen again?

Yes. A new referral is required if you have not been seen at the clinic for over a year or if you have been previously discharged from our clinic. If your dermatologist has informed you that you will be booked for a repeat consultation in 12-18 months this is an 'implicit re-referral' and you do not need a new referral.

If you have a skin condition that can be managed by your family physician or nurse practitioner the dermatologist will discharge you from ongoing care, with recommendations to your physician for management. Patients will be told that they are being discharged from ongoing care at their last appointment, and this is also communicated to the referring provider. Another referral can be requested for reassessment if your condition is no longer stable or there are other questions/concerns.

Once I've been seen at this clinic, can I see any dermatologist?

The dermatologist you are scheduled to see when you are called for your initial appointment is the dermatologist you will be seeing for ongoing care, if needed.

If you would like to see a specific dermatologist, please have that included in your referral. Our staff will do our best to accommodate, but we cannot make any guarantees.

Please note that Dr. Matthew Roberts closed his practice in Prince George as of August 1, 2025 and his patients were sent a letter informing them of discharge from his care. Unless Dr. Roberts patients were referred by him to another of the clinic's dermatologists then they have been discharged.

My referral was declined, why?

There are several reasons we may not have been able to accept a referral, this may include:

  • Patient does not live in Northern Health
  • There are many skin conditions that family physicians and/or nurse practitioners have experience managing, and we are therefore do not accept referrals for patients that have not tried/failed first line treatment for a skin condition (ex. a patient with acne who has not tried any prescription topical or oral medications).
  • Complete excision (wide local excision) of biopsy proven skin cancer – these should be referred to a surgeon.
  • Elective/cosmetic treatments not offered at our clinic, for example lasers, or photodynamic therapy.

We are not currently accepting referrals for the following conditions:

  • Chronic or mild skin conditions that do not have a documented trial and failure of therapy
  • Skin checks without a specific lesion of concern
  • Biopsy proven skin cancers needing excision – these should be referred to a surgeon
  • Photodynamic therapy
    • This is a treatment that uses light and photosensitizing medication to destroy precancerous cells and some superficial skin cancers
    • Drs Flegel and Glover do not have this service in their practice. In Prince George it is available at Azure Advanced Aesthetics and Vitality Plastic Surgery
  • Oral lesions
    • Patients can request a referral to the following services: Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Dentistry, or Ear Nose & Throat
  • Allergy Testing for urticaria (hives)
    • We do not perform skin prick allergy testing or patch testing
    • Patients should be referred to an Allergy & Immunologist for skin prick testing, or for urticaria (hives)
    • Patients with suspected allergic contact dermatitis will be seen and referred for patch testing if indicated
  • Ingrown toenails, paronychia, nail removal
    • A referral can be made to surgery or podiatry as appropriate
  • Conditions involving the ear canal
    • A referral can be made to Otolaryngology (Ear, Nose & Throat physician) as appropriate
  • Laser treatment – including laser treatment for spider veins, acne/surgical scars, wrinkles and fine lines, uneven skin tone and pigmentation disorders (e.g. melasma), etc.
Your Appointment
How long is my appointment?

Appointments are scheduled for 10 minutes unless otherwise stated.

Can I ask the Dermatologist about all of my skin concerns?

No. A dermatology consultation focuses on the question or concern that you have been referred for by your physician or nurse practitioner. If the referring provider has asked for assessment of more than one concern this may require more than one appointment, depending on the complexity of the issues.

I'm a current patient being seen for annual skin exams and have a new skin lesion I'm worried about. Can I call and book an appointment sooner?

Due to our extensive waitlist, we are unable to accommodate regular follow-up appointments, unless your dermatologist has told you otherwise. If you have a new lesion of concern, please see your family physician or nurse practitioner for assessment first. If they need assistance managing the skin concern a note requesting the patient to be seen sooner is sent, and then our staff will call you to schedule an appointment.

What type of skin conditions do you see/treat?

Dermatologists specialize in the treatment of conditions affecting the skin, hair, and nails – this includes over 3000 different diseases. Dr. Flegel and Dr. Glover see patients of all ages for general medical dermatology concerns.

Examples of some conditions our dermatologists treat:

  • Skin cancer – diagnosis and ongoing skin surveillance
  • Congenital skin conditions (eg. Birthmarks)
  • Inflammatory skin disorders: Psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, eczema, lichen planus
  • Bullous (blistering) disorders
